HISTORY

DE JAGER HOUSE, 188 MAIN STREET, PAARL
Formerly the administrative offices of Huis Vergenoegd and currently houses the offices of Boy Louw attorneys.
The land was originally a part of the farm Pontak which was granted to Jan Labuschagne in 1723. The property subsequently changed hands several times. During 1805 - 1809 the property was subdivided into 3 parts and reference was made to VERGENOEGD which one Joshua le Roux transferred to Gerrit Nieuwoudt in 1818 and on which the existing building stands today. The historic well already existed by then. The boundary line of Vergenoegd and Welgegund, ran right through the middle of the well. This well was the original water source of Paarl and at 5 o'clock in the afternoon the bell rang so that everyone could come and fetch water.
Everything indicates that Gerrit Nieuwoudt built the house shortly after taking possession of the property.
This property would later be known as de Jager House. In 1966, the company Historic Houses, in consultation with the ACVV, acquired this property. Huis Vergenoegd rented this historic house from 1975 to 2011. The De Jager House was subsequently occupied by the current tenants, Boy Louw Attorneys.
HUIS VERGENOEGD MAIN BUILDING
The building is the work of a well-known Victorian architect, Anthonie de Witt. These buildings form part of the rich cultural architecture of Paarl.
